Overview
First off, we'd like to welcome you to Mailgun!
Since you're reading this page, odds are that you've encountered a snag in or perhaps have a question about the Account Activation process.
To quickly summarize the process: every account completes a two-step account activation process to help ensure the security and reliability of our platform for all of our customers. This involves verifying both your email address and a phone number. This guide will give you all the information needed to activate your account and begin using Mailgun!
The Account Activation process
After signing up for a new Mailgun account, you'll need to complete two simple verification steps to activate it.
Email Verification
- After creating your account, we will send a verification email to the address you provided during signup.
- Open the verification email and click the activation link inside. This will confirm that you have access to the email address.
Phone Number (SMS) Verification
- Next, you'll be prompted to enter a mobile phone number.
- We will send a one-time password (OTP) via SMS to this number.
- Enter the code you receive into the verification field on the screen to confirm you have access to the phone number.
Once both your email and phone number are verified, your account will be active, and you'll have full access to the Mailgun platform.
Troubleshooting common issues
If you encounter any issues during the activation process, here are some common solutions.
If you haven't received the verification email
Common reasons for Email Verification Failure
- Typo in Email Address: A simple spelling mistake in the email address provided at signup is the most common reason for not receiving the verification email.
- Spam or Junk Filters: Aggressive email filters may automatically move the verification email to your spam, junk, or promotions folder.
- Email Server Blocks: Some corporate or private email servers have strict filtering rules or firewalls that may block automated emails from new sources.
- Delivery Delays: Sometimes, there can be a normal delay between when we send the email and when it arrives in your inbox.
What to do
- Wait a few minutes: There can occasionally be a short delay in email delivery.
- Check your spam, junk, and other folders: Be sure to look everywhere in your mailbox. Sometimes, automated emails can be mistakenly filtered.
- Verify the link promptly: For your security, the verification link in the email is time-sensitive and will expire. If you find the email later and the link no longer works, please try to log in to your Mailgun account again. You will be prompted to resend the verification email.

If you haven't received the SMS verification code
Several factors can prevent the successful delivery of the SMS verification code. Before retrying, review these common causes and solutions.
Common reasons for phone verification failure
- Using a Non-Mobile Number: Our system requires a standard mobile phone number for verification. Voice over IP (VoIP), virtual numbers, and landlines cannot be used.
- Incorrect Information: A simple typo in the phone number or an incorrect country code is a frequent cause of failure.
- Too Many Attempts: For security, we limit the number of verification codes that can be sent in a short period. If you've tried multiple times, a temporary hold may be placed on your account.
- Carrier or Network Issues: Your mobile carrier may block automated messages, or a weak cellular signal can prevent or delay the SMS from being delivered.
- SMS Filtering Apps: Some apps designed to block spam messages may inadvertently block the verification code from Mailgun.
What to do
- Double-check your phone number: Ensure you entered the correct mobile number and country code.
- Enter the code promptly: The SMS verification code is also time-sensitive and expires after a short period. If the code you entered doesn't work, it has likely expired. Please request a new code to be sent from the verification screen.
- Wait before retrying: If you've requested the code multiple times, please wait at least 15 minutes before trying again to avoid being temporarily locked out.
- Check your device: Ensure you have a stable cellular connection and check that no spam-filtering apps are blocking the message.
