Mailgun Inspect is an allotment-based product, and usage is measured by the number of previews you run.
How Usage Works
Allotments
- Subscription plans: Monthly allotment, resets on the 1st of each month.
- Contract plans: Annual allotment, lasts for the duration of your contract.
What counts as usage?
Usage is based on previews, not tests.
- 1 preview = 1 email client/device rendering
- Running a test with 100 clients/devices = 100 previews
The number of clients/devices you select per test directly impacts your usage.
Overage costs
If you exceed your allotment, there are overage charges:
- Subscription plans: $0.15 per additional preview
- Contract plans: Overage rate is defined in your contract
Managing Your Usage
The best way to control usage is with preview profiles.
What is a preview profile?
A preview profile is a saved selection of email clients and devices you can select when running a test.
- The default profile includes all previews
- Any user can create and use preview profiles
Setting a default profile
Any user can set a default preview profile for the account. This can be done by checking the Set as default check box on the profile. This can be done in two places:
- When creating a new profile on the Create Test page.
- On the Preview profiles settings page, which is in the dropdown that appears when you click your name on the top right of the page. Here you can create new profiles, edit exiting profiles, and set profiles as the default.
The default profile applies to all users, and it is automatically selected when creating a new test. Users can still switch the profiles for individual tests.
Considerations when submitting a test via your ESP
Each preview profile has a unique email address for submitting a test. To get this email address, go to New Test > From email provider, select the preview profile you want to use, and copy the provided email address. All tests sent to that email address will use your selected preview profile.
If you using this submission method, and your usage is too high, make sure you aren’t accidentally including the submission email address in sends that you do not mean to test.
Also, if you want to select a default preview profile for this submission method, make sure you are using the unique email address associated with the default preview profile.
Best practices
- Create a lean default profile: Focus on the most important clients for your audience
- Include key variations: Pair light mode and dark mode on important devices
- Avoid testing everything every time: Only use full coverage when needed
- Align your team: Set clear guidelines on when to use different profiles
