Overview
This article covers the new Dedicated IP page within our Mailgun Control Panel. The former page is available for a limited time until our customers become better accustomed to this change.
Dedicated IPs isolate your sending reputation and optimize deliverability when sending large volumes of messages. Mailgun’s updated Dedicated IPs dashboard centralizes visibility and control over all dedicated IPs across your primary account, subaccounts, and IP pools in a single interface. This page removes the need to switch between subaccounts to monitor allocation, verify IP relationships, or update configuration details.
Navigating to the Dedicated IPs Dashboard
To access the centralized Dedicated IP control panel:
- Log in to the Mailgun Control Panel.
- From the left-hand navigation menu, select Send and navigate to Send Settings.
- Click on Dedicated IPs (labeled as Dedicated IPs (New) during the beta phase).
Understanding the IP Inventory Table
The main Dedicated IPs table provides a high-level overview of your entire IP inventory:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| IP address | The dedicated IP address. Clicking on the IP address link opens its dedicated IP Details page. |
| Description | A customizable note or label to identify the specific use case of the IP. |
| Warmup | The current stage and volume status of the Automatic IP Warmup process (e.g., Stage: 7/30). For more on warm-up, see this article.
|
| Linked Subaccount(s) | The total number of subaccounts linked directly to this IP. |
| Linked Domain(s) | The total number of domains linked directly to this IP. Note: Only direct IP-to-domain links are counted. Domains linked indirectly via IP Pools are excluded. |
| Linked IP Pool(s) | The total number of IP pools this IP is currently associated with. |
Searching and Filtering Dedicated IPs
To locate specific IPs in large portfolios, utilize the search bar or the advanced filters panel:
- Search by IP address: Type the partial or full IP address in the search box above the table.
- Using Filters: Click the Filters button to open the slide-out filter panel on the right side of the screen.
Advanced Filter Nuances
The filter tool allows you to target exact IP subsets by combining precise conditions:
- Choose your relationship direction (IPs linked to or IPs not linked to).
- Select the entity target type (Domain(s), Subaccount(s), or IP Pool(s)).
- Narrow Search (Optional): If you filter by a specific target type, an optional search field (e.g., Search Domains) will appear, allowing you to select specific names.
- Chain Conditions: Click + Add another to chain multiple filters (e.g., finding IPs linked to a specific Subaccount but not associated with an IP Pool).
- Click Apply to filter your inventory.
Managing Dedicated IP Descriptions
Adding customizable descriptions helps your team quickly identify the purpose of specific IPs (up to 250 characters):
- First, log in to the Mailgun Control Panel (if you have not already done so).
- Then, at the top-right corner of the page, click the Profile drop-down menu to expand its list of options.
- Next, click the Dedicated IPs option. Alternatively, you can use this direct link.
- Click on the IP address link from the main table to open its IP Details page.
- In the IP details section, locate the Description card and click Edit.
- Enter your custom description in the text box.
- Click Save. A temporary toast notification in the portal will confirm your description was successfully updated.
Assigning A Dedicated IP
To send emails using a dedicated IP, it must be linked to your sending entities. Depending on your configuration, you can link an IP directly to domains, subaccounts, or IP pools. Mailgun’s centralized control panel lets you manage these associations from one screen without jumping between subaccounts.
⚠️ The Exclusivity Rule (IP Pools vs. Direct Linking)
Once a dedicated IP is linked to an IP Pool, it can no longer be directly linked to a subaccount or domain. All relationships must be routed through that pool.
If you attempt to link an IP that belongs to an IP Pool, the Link IP button in the top-right corner of the IP Details page will be disabled (grayed out) and change to Link to domains. Hovering over the button will display a tooltip warning:
"Once an IP is linked to a Pool, it can no longer be linked to a subaccount or domain."
To directly link the IP to a domain or subaccount, you must first unlink it from all active IP Pools.
Linking a Dedicated IP (New Method)
If your IP is unlinked or has no pool constraints, follow these steps to link it:
- First, log in to the Mailgun Control Panel (if you have not already done so).
- Then, at the top-right corner of the page, click the Profile drop-down menu to expand its list of options.
- Next, click the Dedicated IPs (New) option
- Click the IP address from the main table to open its IP Details page.
- Click the Link IP dropdown menu in the top-right corner.
- Select your target association type:
- To subaccounts: In the slide-out panel, search and select the subaccount(s) you want to link, then click Link IP to subaccounts.
- To Domains: Select the target account the domain belongs to (primary or a subaccount), search and select the specific domains, then click Link IP to domains.
- To IP Pools: Select the target account, search and select the specific IP Pool(s), then click Link IP to IP Pools.
- Confirm your changes in the pop-up dialog box to apply.
Unlinking a Dedicated IP (New Method)
To remove assignments or free up an IP for other sending needs:
- First, log in to the Mailgun Control Panel (if you have not already done so).
- Then, at the top-right corner of the page, click the Profile drop-down menu to expand its list of options.
- Next, click the Dedicated IPs (New) option
- Navigate to the IP Details page of the target IP.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page where the Linked Domains, Linked Subaccounts, and Linked IP Pools tables are located.
- Check the selection box next to the domain, subaccount, or pool you want to unlink.
- Click the Unlink selected [Entities] button located directly above the respective table.
- In the confirmation modal, review the affected target entities and click Unlink to finalize.
